What is Scaling & Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical, deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from below the gumline. This treatment is often recommended for patients showing signs of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums. By thoroughly cleaning the roots of your teeth, we can eliminate bacteria and promote healing of the gum tissue.
Why is Scaling & Root Planing Necessary?
Gum disease is a common but serious condition that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. If not removed through regular brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. When tartar builds up below the gumline, it can cause inflammation, infection, and damage to the supporting structures of your teeth.
Scaling and root planing is necessary to:
Remove Plaque and Tartar: Eliminate the buildup of harmful substances that cause gum disease.
Reduce Inflammation: Clean the roots of your teeth to reduce gum inflammation and promote healing.
Prevent Disease Progression: Stop the advancement of gum disease and prevent further damage to your teeth and gums.
The Scaling & Root Planing Procedure
Examination and Diagnosis
Before starting the procedure, our dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. This may include taking X-rays to assess the extent of the disease and measure the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth.
Local Anesthesia
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the areas being treated. This makes the process virtually painless.
Scaling
During the scaling portion of the procedure, we use specialized dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. This includes cleaning the pockets around your teeth to eliminate bacteria and debris.
Root Planing
Root planing involves smoothing out the roots of your teeth to remove rough spots where bacteria can accumulate. This helps the gums reattach to the teeth and reduces the depth of the gum pockets, promoting healing and preventing further infection.
Post-Treatment Care
After the procedure, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your teeth and gums. This may include using antimicrobial mouthwash, maintaining good oral hygiene practices, and scheduling follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
Benefits of Scaling & Root Planing
Prevents Tooth Loss
By removing the buildup of plaque and tartar and treating gum disease early, scaling and root planing can help prevent tooth loss and maintain the integrity of your smile.
Improves Oral Health
This deep cleaning procedure significantly improves the health of your gums, reducing inflammation and bleeding while promoting gum tissue healing.
Reduces Bad Breath
Removing bacteria and debris from below the gumline helps eliminate the source of bad breath (halitosis), leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.
Enhances Overall Health
Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Treating gum disease can reduce the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems.
